About Fish Tank Helper

Fish Tank Helper is a free resource for people setting up their first aquarium, or trying to fix one that isn't going right.

Hi, I'm Andy. I've kept fish for over 10 years and currently look after 18 tanks. Everything on this site comes from that hands-on experience: the setups that work, the mistakes that cost fish, and the shortcuts that don't.

A lot of beginner fishkeeping advice is either too technical or out of date, like the idea that a betta can live happily in a bowl. This site aims to fix that with simple calculators that do the math for you, and step-by-step guides that tell you what to do and why.

What you'll find here

• Free calculators for tank volume, stocking and water changes.
• Beginner guides, starting with everything you need to start a fish tank and how to cycle it.

How this site is funded

Everything here is free to use. Some links to products are affiliate links, which means that if you buy through them, I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. I also sell a printable beginner's guide, Your First Aquarium. I only recommend gear that suits the job, and I'll always tell you when cheaper or simpler gear will do.
